Aikman Primary Believes in the Value of Being Included

In the eyes of a child, being included is of major importance. Therefore, the staff of Aikman Primary work together to see that the inclusion needs of our "special children" are met.  Having friends inside and outside the classroom play an essential role in social skills development and foster the feelings of love and belonging.  We have a great desire to provide that type of atmosphere here at Aikman.  We recognize the value of diversity and encourage all children to get to know and understand one another.  Whether differences are cultural, economic, social or because of special needs, we believe all children will benefit from an increase in awareness, and fear will be replaced with understanding.

Teaching for Mastery

It is our belief that students learn best through a multi-sensory approach.  If students can experience learning through their senses, they are more apt to understand and remember what they are taught.  We use music, art, cooking, games and story  re-enactments to help students relate to lessons.  Success and enjoyment help children develop a life-long love of learning.

Repetition and practice are also essential in mastering new learning objectives.  Students have the opportunity to practice skills daily through a structured teaching approach developed by Project TEACCH.  Each student has an individualized work system designed for him/her and based on the child's individual education plan.  Students develop confidence through this structured technique.
