HEREFORD, Texas — The Hereford Whitefaces opened the 2026 football season in impressive fashion Friday night, defeating the Borger Bulldogs 38-13 on Aug. 28 at Bulldog Stadium.
The season-opening victory moves the Herd to 1-0 and gave Hereford its first win under Head Coach Matt Medley.
Hereford’s D-Block Defense set the tone throughout the night, creating constant disruption and forcing Borger into seven turnovers. The Whitefaces intercepted five passes, including one returned for a touchdown, forced two fumbles and recovered one. The defensive front also recorded five tackles for loss.
Offensively, the Herd controlled the line of scrimmage and time of possession while finding the end zone four times.
Zach Galvan led the ground attack with 78 yards on 13 carries and three rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Bennett Bell completed 8 of 15 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Jonathan Tarango for the score. Tarango finished with three receptions for 51 yards.
The defense received contributions from across the field. Noel Castillo recorded two interceptions, including a pick-six, while Brix Machen, Lucio Sifuentes and Edward Rodriguez each added an interception.
Sifuentes and Elias Damian each forced a fumble, with Noah Briones recording a fumble recovery. Quay Shugart led the defensive front with two tackles for loss, while Briones, Marcos Perez and Luke Harmon each added one.
Special teams also delivered a perfect night from Pedro Garcia, who converted all five extra-point attempts and connected on his lone field-goal attempt.
“We had a goal of going 1-0 on the week and we accomplished that. Proud of these young men and the coaching staff for all the hard work they are doing. #HerdONE,” Medley said.
