The Herd Tennis team continues to make its presence known, putting together an impressive stretch of district play highlighted by wins over No. 8 ranked West Plains and Dumas.
Against West Plains, the Herd faced much more than a tough opponent. Rain delays forced the match to stretch late into the night and eventually into the following day, but Hereford stayed focused and battled its way to an impressive 12 to 7 victory.
Steeven Weng delivered one of the biggest moments of the match, clinching Hereford’s 10th win with a hard fought 6 - 4, 6 - 4 singles victory.
But the athletes were not the only ones who stepped up. Herd Tennis gave special recognition to the parents who worked behind the scenes throughout the delays. Parents helped squeegee and dry the courts so play could resume and continued providing meals, drinks and snacks for athletes throughout the extended match. Their willingness to jump in wherever needed was another example of the support surrounding the Herd Tennis program.
There was little time to slow down. Hereford turned around and delivered another dominant performance against Dumas, winning 16 to 3. The Herd swept doubles play and jumped out to an incredible 7 to 0 start before Nayeli Villarreal eventually secured the 10th match to clinch the team victory.
The strong performances are part of an impressive start to the season for Hereford. The Herd is now ranked No. 8 in the state and continues to build momentum through district competition.
With athletes competing for every point, teammates supporting one another and families willing to do whatever it takes to help, Herd Tennis is showing that its success extends far beyond the court.
The Herd is rolling, and there is plenty of tennis still to come.
