School vouchers, also known as education savings accounts, are funded through a separate state program and are not paid for through local property tax dollars collected for Hereford ISD. Local tax dollars generated in our community remain tied to supporting our local schools.

While state policy can impact education funding discussions, our community should not be alarmed by claims that vouchers will drain local resources. Hereford ISD will continue serving students and supporting staff.

If you have questions about school vouchers or their impact on Hereford ISD, please reach out to Dr. Ralph Carter.

This graphic represents the current project budget summary for the proposed HISD school bond.

There are a few important things we want to clarify. This is not an official budget. Final numbers will not be determined unless the bond passes and official architectural drawings are completed. These estimates are based on research and experience, developed in collaboration with our architect and construction consultants.

The new high school and safe rooms are the top priorities in this proposal. District upgrades will only be considered if funds remain after these primary projects are completed.

The total cost includes a year of construction escalation, as well as turn key facilities, meaning each new space will be fully equipped with technology, furniture, and everything students need on day one.

For this bond, the average homeowner with a homestead exemption would see an estimated increase of $9.83 per month.

What is included in the bond?

This $150 million bond proposal focuses on the future, safety, and growth of our district. Plans include building a new high school, adding safe rooms at every campus, and relocating the softball and tennis courts to make room for the new high school.

One of the most important pieces of this bond is the addition of safe rooms across the district. Currently, all of our elementary campuses use their cafeterias as a gym, cafeteria, and auditorium all in one. Adding dedicated safe rooms will not only add additional safety measures at all campuses, but also free up those shared spaces so students can spend more time learning, eating, and participating in activities without scheduling conflicts.

These safe rooms are designed with safety as the top priority. They will provide secure shelter for our students and staff during severe weather, and they will also serve our community. In the event of inclement weather, these rooms can be unlocked remotely to provide a safe place for surrounding residents.

Big news from our choir program! 🎶👏

Our students earned Sweepstakes at the UIL Concert & Sight Reading Evaluation, the first time in school history that our program has received this honor at any level!

This achievement is even more impressive considering the challenges they faced this year, including schedule changes and limited rehearsal time. Through it all, these students stayed committed and delivered a performance they can be incredibly proud of.

We are so proud of their hard work and dedication, and we appreciate the continued support of our fine arts programs.

What is a Homestead Exemption and how does it work ?

A homestead exemption is a property tax benefit that lowers the taxable value of your primary home, which can reduce how much you pay in property taxes.

Where do I go to apply or check mine?
In Hereford, you’ll go through the Deaf Smith County Appraisal District.
You can apply, check your status, or download forms online or in person:

140 E. 3rd St., Hereford, TX
Or visit: www.deafsmithcad.org

What are the exemption amounts?

Standard Homestead = $140,000
Age 65+ or Disabled = $200,000 plus a tax ceiling (freeze) on school taxes

Who qualifies?

You must own and live in the home as your primary residence
Additional exemptions may apply for seniors, disabled individuals, or veterans

Applying is free
Once approved, it usually stays in place as long as you live in the home
It can also limit how much your home’s taxable value increases each year

If you own your home, it’s worth taking a few minutes to check, you could already qualify and not even know it!
